Power to Win

KB1034 - Installation notes for Version 8.0

Overview

Power to Win version 9.0 introduces many new features but in particular it has removed the limitation of the number of channels that could previously be defined by the configuration program. In addition to channels sent from a 3rd party ECU this release supports additional data from other external CAN devices such TMS, GPS and PCU.

Before you can use version 9.0 it is necessary to first convert your old setup files. The version 8.0 config program will perform this step for you the first time it is opened. All of your old setup information will be preserved with the exception of the telemetry setup which must be manually re-created and also the TMS type definition.

The USB monitor program has also been updated to allow monitoring of the new channels and so when first opened will contain a blank screen and require new channel windows to be defined. Please contact you EFI technical representative for further assistance converting or re-creating new USB screens.

Installing Libraries

Microsoft has made several changes to the Visual Studio 2008 C++ run-time environment. You can no longer simply copy missing dll files that are required by an application to the system32 folder. You must download and/or install these missing files on the target/customer machine by running vcredist_86.exe.

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package "vcredist_x86.exe" installs the runtime components required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual Studio C++ 2008 installed. Please contact your EFI representative for further information.

Instructions

  1. Run the vcredist_x86.exe application.
  2. Click "Yes" to accept the terms of the license agreement.
  3. The runtime components will be installed.

New System Files

Some new files will be created when using version 9.0, their names and functions are listed below. It is recommended to make a full backup of your Power to Win\Setup directory before installing version 9.0.

System Requirements

In order to utilize all of the new features of this release it is necessary to have the master boot rom of your logger upgraded before loading any new firmware. If this is not done the USB monitor program will not display channel data correctly but the LCU will function normally. Your SWD or LCD dash should also be upgraded to allow the new 4th page of data to be displayed.

Converting Files

  1. Install the new executables & libraries.
  2. Open the Config program and select in turn each of the defined cars.

The first time you run config it will open your channel.def file, extract your existing channel definitions and then create a new channel descriptor file with the name "channel.dsc". After converting your channel definitions it will convert the setup file for the current car.

  3. Open the USB comms program.
  4. Load the logger hex file & re-boot.

The USB monitor will initially be blank and new screens must be re-created.

  5. Send the setup to the car.
  6. You logger is now upgraded and ready to use.

Analysis

The new analysis can only be used with either version 8.0 or 9.0 data files. When a version 7.0 or older data file is opened you will be warned that it must first be converted to version 9.0 format. Please contact your EFI representative for further information on converting data files.
